Personal reputation is more important than ever before, and not just because more people are googling you before deciding to meet with you.
One of the other main reasons your professional reputation matters so much is because it is increasingly a driver of professional referrals.
rofessional referrals are those where a client seeks an opinion from a professional on who a particular expert is who can help resolve a particular problem. It is increasingly common for example for a client to ask their accountant for a recommendation to a financial planner…so being guided by one professional to the expert or specialist in another discipline is a key behaviour of the more sophisticated clients.
There are many things one can and should do to increase your profile and reputation with other professionals, but one of the quickest ways to position as an expert professional in a particular area is through public speaking. Not necessarily being the main platform speaker at large conferences, but being the specialist talking to local community and business groups is superb positioning. It is a fast-track method of establishing a reputation as an expert in your community, and with other professionals from different disciplines.
